Anyone in the world By Donovan Baldwin WHAT THE BEST WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM IS NOT. The best weight loss program is NOT about diets, diet pills, fad diets, or even dieting. While it involves physical activity...we're all adults here, I'll use the word..exercise...it is NOT about pushing your physical limits, embarrassing yourself in front of the neighbors, joining an expensive gym, or hiring a personal trainer. It is NOT about joining a cult, avoiding friends, alienating your family, eating only disgusting, uappealing and unappetizing foods or feeling guilty and depressed. Most of all, it should NEVER be about BEING ALONE in your struggle. WHAT THE BEST WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM IS! In it's simplest form, the best weight loss program is the one you will stick with. Let's modify that a little and say that it is a healthy, doable, rational, flexible program you will stick with...that works! THE BASIC FACTS ABOUT DIETING AND WEIGHT LOSS! Diets don't work. Yep! That simple. Oh, if you want to drop 5 or 10 lbs to look good at your sister's wedding, a quick diet might be okay. But if you truly have a weight problem, as over 50% of Americans do, it is a lifelong condition and requires lifelong measures. However, don't consider yourself doomed to a life without pleasure or happiness, and don't give up. Go back and read the first paragraph, and realize that there are things that CAN be done, and YOU CAN DO THEM. In the meantime however, let me just cover a few facts. Quick and dirty. You can scan through them and just get the basics. This article is not going to be big enough, nor intimidating enough, to include everything. WHY DIETS DON'T WORK. Diets don't work for a lot of reasons, physical and mental, but I don't have enough space here to cover all of them. If you would like to read more on this, I have a webpage at http://nodiet4me.net/10reasons.html that gives 10 reasons why diets don't work, and those aren't the only reasons, either. The main reason a diet will not work is that your body has some really effective self-regulating mechanisms. If you deprive it of it's expected calorie intake over a period of time, it will adjust itself to need less calories. Although you will be eating less (and definitely not enjoying it), your body will settle into a new pattern and your weight will level off with only a small weight loss. Even worse, when you stop dieting, as you know you will, the body will keep its new level of calorie need while you return to your old eating habits. This brings us to another point. THE BASIC LAW OF WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGHT GAIN. Everybody's body works to it's own rhythm and needs, but they all follow the same law. If you take in more calories than your body needs, it will store the excess as fat. Bottom line. Fact. End of discussion...almost. Using the information in the paragraph above, you can see that when you quit your diet and go back to eating the old way after your body has adjusted its needs downward, you now have MORE EXCESS CALORIES TO BE STORED AS FAT! This is why people often GAIN WEIGHT after a diet...or series of diets. SO WHAT IS THE BEST WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM? As you can see, you are back at the beginning of this discussion, but with a little more information. We can still say that the best weight loss program is the one you will stick with, and now you know a little more about why. Since we are all different, the obvious fact should be that what you need to find is not THE best weight loss program, but YOUR best weight loss program...the one YOU will stick with. The biq question in your mind is... HOW DO YOU FIND "YOUR" BEST WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM? There are a lot of things you can do to improve your health, your life, and your personal weight situation, such as drink more water, get plenty of sleep, do things that you enjoy, for example. These can all contribute to weight loss, but let's just look at two things for now. 1. Become more active: Notice, I avoided saying, "exercise". Whoops! I said it. Look, exercise equals activity. If you want to do Richard Simmons' tapes and "Sweat to the Oldies", more power to you. If you choose to buy a Bowflex and in a few months look like the grandmother in their TV commercials, that's great! Odds are however, you just need to make some lifestyle adjustments and become more aware of the opportunities that exist to "exercise" in daily life. Oh sure, a planned and scheduled exercise program is great, but so is a walk, or gardening, or swimming, or cleaning house, or...well, you get the idea. The only need is to make it regular,at least 4 or 5 times a week, and to make it challenging. Only you can assess what is challenging. What is challenging today may simply be walking out to the mailbox and back. One lady started her "exercise program" with that simple step (no pun intended). Another gentleman started his program by walking to the end of his block. That first day, he thought he wouldn't even be able to get back to his house. A few weeks later, he was walking over a mile. At one point in my life, I regularly ran over 6 miles at a time. However, the first time I ever tried to run, I didn't make it half a block. The key is to get started, do it regularly, and challenge yourself. Becoming more active not only burns calories during the activity (remember, the more calories burned the less fat stored), but continuing the activity over time (you were going to do it regularly) causes your body to shift to a new level where it automatically burns more calories than it used to. The facts behind this are not complicated but require a lot more space than we have here, and I did say I was going to keep to the basics. People drop out of "exercise programs" for a lot of reasons. For your purposes, do the activity as it fits in your schedule, pick the activity that pleases you, and vary the activity...if you cleaned house yesterday, take a walk today. By the way, if I told you to exercise, to take a walk, you might begin that avoidance process that makes people drop out of formal, planned exercise programs. Why don't you take the grandkids to the zoo instead? If that isn't a workout, I don't know what is. Be creative. It's your "exercise program", make it what you want it to be. 2. Eat sensibly: You know how you SHOULD be eating, right! Back to basics. Lots of vegetables, cut down on portion sizes, have an apple instead of pie or a candy bar. Take the sugar out of your life. There are all kinds of diet tips running around. Not a single one of them is worth a hill of beans...but a bunch of them add up to a lot more than a hill of beans. Changing only one thing is probably not going to make a big difference, but...IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE! changing seventeen things might make quite a difference, but there's a secret... Don't try to make all seventeen, or twelve, or thirty changes all at once. Start with one change, and once it is part of your life, make the next one. You might want to learn a little bit about Kaizen. Small steps in the nutrition area will help get you where you want to go eventually, just as taking that small walk out to the mailbox may someday lead to walking one or two miles at a time. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO STAY ON THIS WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM? Well, for the rest of your life. That's why it is important to choose activities you enjoy and learn to make better nutrition choices while still enjoying the pleasure of eating. Also, many people have weight loss problems because they have personal issues with life. Your personal weight loss program, regular activity plus nutritional common sense, equals a sense of control over a situation that produces many negative affects in your life. A sense of control over that situation allows you to remove many of those negative affects and move on to rearrange other parts of your life that may need attention. One last point. I have kept this as simple as possible, but it is based on a large body of information. If you truly want to create the most effective weight loss program for you, you will have to learn a lot more than you probably know now. The public library is a good place to start, as is the internet. Be aware, however, that many people will try to entice you with diet pills and lose-weight-quick plans. Stay focused on a lifestyle change that will last all your life. Even if diet pills, fad diets, and things like weight loss belts or devices that supposedly exercise for you do work, their affect is short lived (and sometimes dangerous) and, as was pointed out above, once you quit the pill or the program you may gain back even more weight than you lost. A FINAL TIP: Find a weight loss buddy. Share your goals, and the information in this article, with them. Make sure they are on the same wave length. You might want to walk with them, you might want to shop with them, but most of all, if there is no one else who understands what you are going through...they will, and that is worth more than gold. Anyone in the world By Mark E. Baker James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3. knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Have you ever really stopped and considered that Gods Word is telling us to count it all joy when we are in a test? We have been told to count it all joy, or we would most likely certainly not count it all joy would we? Many or most Christians would not. There is a reason we should be so joyful in extreme circumstances. When our faith is tried, patience is perfected. James explains this in vs. 4. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. W.E. Vines says perfect signifies "having reached its end" (telos), "finished, complete, perfect." Also referring to the complete revelation of God's will and ways, whether in the completed Scriptures or in the hereafter); Jas. 1:4 (of the work of patience) This is the same word used in 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. So who would like to be perfected? James is telling us right here how we become that way. Basically, we have to grow up in the things of God. In order to do this we have to be tested. If you are not tested you will never develop patience, and if you never develop patience you will never be lacking nothing. I know that is a mouthful, but that is the short and long of it. If you want to grow up in the things of God you have to go through some tests. This is the way we are perfected. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, but that faith has to be used or it is of no use to anybody, not to you, not to your family, not to your brothers and sister in Christ, and not to God. Know this, without faith it is impossible to please Him. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Patience is another way of saying endurance, meaning the ability to stand and keep on standing when all are falling around you. Without this kind of patience we will not continue to stand in faith, and if that happens we will definitely be found wanting. That is a very serious thing to consider, especially in these times. That is not what God wants for His children. He wants us to be perfect and entire or complete, lacking nothing or He would not be telling us these things. That is what we should want as well. However getting there is not always fun. We need patience to get there, and getting there should be of primary focus in our lives. Our patience should be developed so that our faith will not fail in the day of adversity. The Apostle Peter said this 1 Peter 1:5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7. that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 8. whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9. receiving the end of your faith the salvation of your souls. Peter said our faith is much more precious than gold that perishes. Think about why the Word is calling your faith precious. It is precious for a reason, and he says here that though it is tested by fire, that it may be found to praise and honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. That is something precious to God. He went to tremendous lengths to get us redeemed. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for our redemption, there could be no greater price paid than was paid by Jesus. However having said that, it will do us no good if we wont receive it and take advantage of the exceeding great and precious promises that God has given to us through Christ. Thats why our faith is so important. God wants us to receive these promises and the only way you can do that is through faith. This is the way God operates; we may not like it but that is the way it is, so we better start to deal with this as adults. He is no respecter of persons. We all at times go through periods of testing whether we want to or not. It is the only way to be found perfect in Him. Some people think the Christian life is a cop out or some kind of a crutch. They can call it what they want but it takes true determination and a level of endurance to walk this kind of walk. I want to say that the rewards are great. Dont get discouraged in a test but be joyful through every bit of it. Peter said a similar thing, he said to greatly rejoice. I think of David, he was a man after Gods own heart. He messed up many times yet he stood up like a man admitted his mistakes and glorified God through it all. This truly pleases the heart of the Father. David said in Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You notice that he didnt say that he was walking in the valley of death, but in the valley of the shadow of death. Circumstances around us can be terrible, it may seem like the walls are caving in on top of us, but just say like David this is just the shadow of death its not taking me down. God is there with me. His Word declares that He will never leave us or forsake us. Glory to His name. Start rejoicing in these times of testing as Peter says.
Think about what an awesome God we serve, and get your mind off of the negative circumstances. Dwelling on the circumstances is not going to help you anyway, it will
only build up your confidence in destruction. David knew that regardless of the circumstances that life dealt him, God would be with him continually comforting him and in the end seeing him through to the finish. At the end of the psalm he said Psalms 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever. What confidence and joyful expectation he had in God. James goes on to say more about this process and why it is necessary for us to have it. James 1:5. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
6. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
7. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
8. he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. We must be patient in the process and not faint. James tells us that we can ask for wisdom and God will give us wisdom liberally and without reproach. Simply meaning, He is not going to chide us and belittle us for not having the answers. He already knows when we dont have the answer, however we are being told to ask for wisdom and understanding and to receive it by faith. Arent you glad God doesnt just leave us hanging, but will give us the wisdom to stand in unwavering faith and walk directly through the valley of the shadow of death. I am!!! Glory to His name. He has never let me down, and He never will. We have to get to the place where we start to understand that God has called us to be mature, seasoned, and strong children capable of going the distance. Yet in order to get to be that way we have to learn to trust in Him in the midst of the circumstances. It makes it a lot easier to know that this is for our good, and in knowing you will come through victorious with faith that has been refined like gold. The purpose of a test is to see what you know, and to give you the confidence to stand strong and endure. We will never gain confidence if we dont stand will we, and we wont stand if we have no patience, and we wont have patience if we never are given the opportunity to put our faith to the test. This is just the way it works. There are no short cuts in growing up. We all have to go through these things, as
God is not a respecter of anyones person. He doesnt play favorites. He promotes those who have gone the distance and were able to stand glorifying Him through it all. So let patience have her perfect work in you so that you may have your faith fulfilled. Dont loose heart in the trial but know that God is faithful to see you through. He most certainly will!
Just be joyful in the refining process knowing that the rewards are great. Glory to God. Amen. Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Do you want to be a joint heir with Christ?
If so, I urge you to earnestly pray the following prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. Your word says, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. (Jn.6:37), So I know You wont cast me out, but You take me in, And I thank you for it. You said in your Word, "whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.'' (Ro. 10:13). I am calling on Your name, So I know You have saved me now, You also said, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. (Ro.10:9,10). I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe He was raised from the dead for my justification. And I confess Him now as my Lord, Because Your Word says, with the heart one believes to righteousness and I do believe with my heart, I have now become the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Cor. 5:21), And I am saved! Thank You, Lord!
I can now truthfully say, I see myself as a born again child of God! Glory to God!!!! Amen. I was raised Catholic and was born again at the age of 17. I received God's call into ministry at the age of 19 and began to prepare for ministry. I graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in 1979. The Lord has called me to teach. Anyone in the world By John Geer Southwestern design has a certain rustic charm to it. It is both neat and elegant, however, it is also able to hold onto a certain amount of it 's rustic roots. I am quite a fan of southwestern style and enjoy the pride that many of its design elements seem to exude. One key aspect of southwestern design that helps provide it with a rustic charm is the type of material often used in southwestern design elements. For the most part southwestern pieces are made from natural and abundant materials. For example a southwestern style bench would often be made from wood rather than an industrialized material such as metal. While such a bench could easily utilize some pillows, having it upholstered with an overly fancy material (like silk) would easily push it outside the bounds of southwestern. Also in service to its rustic appeal southwestern pieces are rarely overly finished. Often the signs of its creation by hand are left on and the piece is not polished. The rough texture and unpatterned surface (such as seeing the carving marks on a cabinet) also help provide southwestern pieces with their valuable simplicity. Many surfaces are simply left unfinished in southwestern design. This can contributes to the simplicity of a design as well as emphasizing certain textures. However, when colors are applied bright colors are lovingly embraced. There are few other styles that use yellow, orange, or dark red as much. However, beyond that the colors are often allowed to weather a bit. For example a particular design might use bright yellows that have been allowed to fade in the sun. In many southwestern designs paint that has begun to bubble up and flake of is not something to be avoided. One reason I particularly enjoy southwestern designs are because they are elegant, yet, not overly cluttered. In fact southwestern pieces are often rather simple designs. They utilize just a few clean straight lines. John Geer runs the online rug store Hazaad.com at http://www.hazaad.com/. He is also a contributor to Hazaad.com's blog (http://blog.hazaad.com/) and helps run Hazaad West, which specializes in southwestern designs, at http://stores.ebay.com/Hazaad-com-West. Anyone in the world By Joshua Goh Mans eternal search for looking young and attractive is present from time immemorial. In modern times however, it has taken a giant leap forward like never before. The concept of Beauty encompasses not only use of cosmetics, but also a whole gamut of ancillary services from hair, skin, garments, shoes, jewelry and the list goes on. The whole range makes a trillion dollar industry worldwide. People, both men and women are going all out spending amazing kind of money in salons and parlors, irrespective of whether it is a friendly neighborhood salon or one run by a mega corporate giant. All this to look younger, look better for their own satisfaction as well for the sake of those around them, so that others see them as they want to be seen. Attraction and beauty becomes all the more important, because they are inseparable concepts when looking for a dating partner. People who are very strict in their idea that beauty is only skin deep or true beauty lies within may think the concept of enhancing outer beauty a bit presumptuous. Acceptance or rejection of a dating partner based on looks alone is undoubtedly cruel, but its a fact of life and sooner we accept it the better it is. Irrespective of your gender and irrespective of your status of a novice or a veteran in the dating scene, I feel that it is a heart-rending topic for discussion. The heavy emphasis on looks and attractiveness may seem unjustified for you but nevertheless it exists and you can neither evade it nor ignore it. And all this, despite the world-wide liberalization, movements against racial discrimination, fight against religious oppression and overall modernization of world culture in entirety. One would naturally presume that such narrow-minded approach to another human being as because genetically he has not inherited the Adonis looks, is to my mind grossly unfavorable. The fact of the matter is that when it comes to choosing a dating partner, what grabs our attention, first and foremost, are the looks. Most of us will deny this. There are far more profound qualities like strength of character, sensitivity, cultured mind, commonality of interest areas, so on and so forth will emerge as the criteria of selection. In reality however, we seem to dwell only on the first hand appearance of a person. Even extensive research has shown that people make the first choice based on looks and it is those looks which create the first impression. This is because of our tutored mind, which over the years have been conditioned by TV, magazines and other media who have created certain role models in our minds. These celebrity looks have been entrenched in our psyche so much that all of us want to be a duplicate of Naomi Campbell or Brad Pitt. These genetically fortunate and media-highlighted personalities have shaped our minds completely. While our rational mind tells us that these are distant dreams and we should not chase a mirage throughout our fruitful years I believe that there are many steps we can take to improve our appearance and measures which cover up our flaws and warts and make us naturally beautiful and attractive. So as first step, where should you start? First, you must be your own best friend. By this I mean, you should be completely happy with yourself, the way you are. This particular aspect in ones character, shows up as confidence and high level of self-esteem, which in turn makes one very sexy and attractive especially to a dating partner. Of course, you should not stop at this. Look at what modern cosmetic research and development has done for us. From laser surgery to perk up your nose to the shampoo for the most obstinate hair, its all there for you to choose from. Hair re-growth products, skin toners and specialty make up tools for day and night the plethora of options is indeed mind-boggling. Then comes your wardrobe. What are you wearing? Of course something that makes you comfortable, but are you turning up to meet your date in you favorite rag-jeans which you picked up in the 80s? Think, may be the contents of your wardrobe would suit better for donation for philanthropic purposes ! Go for a full overhauling. Because if you look good, you feel good and all this shows up in your face and personality. Then comes your body beautiful. Work out to keep it in shape. You dont have to look like Sylvester Stallone, but a regular exercise regimen keeps you fit, both mentally and physically. Clinical psychologists confirm that men look for beauty for short-term relationships while it becomes secondary when he is looking for a committed partner. Be that as it may, remember it is ultimately that much-coveted sex appeal which lands you at the right place with the right person of your choice. Beauty, looks, outward appearance all these are very relevant when you are just entering the dating scenario, especially with amazing opportunities opening up through on-line dating etc. All of us want someone to like us for the right reasons, but you just cant help the human nature of falling for beauty first. Never mind if you are not Julia Roberts or Pierce Brosnan, you can give it your best shot, to look the best you can. Joshua Goh is dating & relationship expert. Anyone in the world By Tammy Briggs What makes a perfect embroidered product? Have you ever noticed an embroidered logo or sewn garment? Did it strike you as being a quality produced product, or one that looked like it was mass produced and sewn in a cheap fashion? Nearly 10 years ago I founded my Denver based embroidery company with only one thing in mind - Perfect Products. Finished products that people would notice and want to wear or display. Since then, our business has grown 1000 fold. And we have always kept to our motto of perfect products, guaranteed quality, satisfied customers. But what makes a quality, embroidered product? Lets begin with the design before it is sewn to the garment. Was your design created in vector art using Adobe Illustrator? From these AI files, we are able to utilize our custom digitizing techniques, which translate to machine readable files and subsequent sew-outs on our Tajima and Barudan Embroidery Sewing Stations. Another important ingredient is choice of color. Why chose a quality embroidered design while selecting a less than desirable color scheme? We use only the pantone color schemes when selecting our sew outs. And speaking of color schemes, what about thread selection? Have you ever considered that some embroidery threads are low-quality, and will break after only a short time in use? Our thread selections only allow for the best thread offerings, including Ackerman and (the German one). Threads are offered in nylon and cotton, depending on the article to be sewn. Make sure your embroidery company selects the appropriate thread, no matter what the color. All of the above factors will be meaningless unless the digitized image has appropriate stitch count (density) when finally sewing the image. Make sure your design does not come up short when digitizing your image. Many companies will reduce stitch counts during digitizing to allow for less embroidery thread (cheaper) and less dense sewn images (less time to be sewn), all resulting in poor quality finished goods. We at Corporate Imprints are aware of all the shortcuts, and assure all of our customers that only a quality finished product is our goal. Next time you inspect your embroidered shirt, cap, or other wearable; decide if it was produced with an eye on quality, or an eye on the embroidery companys bottom line. Then call us for a quote and with assurance that once we have earned your business, you will never need to look elsewhere for quality embroidered products. Tammy Briggs is the owner of Corporate Imprints, a Denver, CO based machine embroidery company. Anyone in the world By Heather Eagar Using a job acceptance letter when offered a position shows true professionalism. It is a way of saying thank you to the person who hired you, and giving them assurance that they made the right decision. You have presented yourself to them as a professional with your resume, cover letter, reference sheet, salary history, letters of recommendation, follow up note, and any other personal marketing materials youve used while job hunting. You went out of your way to make sure that the interview went well, and probably did your homework on the company before going in for that first interview. Now using a job acceptance letter will be a capstone on all your work, and perfect the positive professional image youve tried to convey throughout the job search and hiring process. Of course, if youve never written one before you may have questions as to what it should contain and how it should look. Here are the basics: it should be on the same paper your resume and cover letter were on, preferably a light gray or ivory linen, laid, or parchment paper or one of the new sandstone papers. It should have a letterhead that matches the other personal marketing materials youve used. It should be personally addressed to the decision maker who hired you. The job acceptance letter should also be placed in either a matching business sized envelope, or a large white envelope to avoid folding, and should be personally addressed. If your own handwriting isnt very legible, print the address, or have a friend with great handwriting address it for you. It should also be short. Show that you respect the hiring managers time by being direct, while still polite. You can say everything you need to say in two or three paragraphs which are quick to read. When writing the job acceptance letter be straightforward and professional. Let the hiring manager know that you are looking forward to being a part of the team at your new company. Let him or her know that you appreciate the opportunity and will do your best. Let the decision maker know that you are aware of any special conditions of the job offer, and will adhere to them. That will avoid any misunderstandings down the road. Also make sure that the job acceptance letter states that you understand the starting date of your employment with this new organization, and assure the hiring manager that you will be there on the specified date, and time, ready to get busy. Sign it using blue ink in your pen so that they know it is not a photo copy, and hand deliver it to the decision makers administrative assistance. In this manner you will show yourself to be a true professional, and someone they will want to work with in the future. Are you guilty of sabotaging your own job search along with the

Anyone in the world By Malcolm Kay Before the advent of mass production, most furniture was largely handcrafted by artisans. Of course, time has moved on and construction techniques, mechanical tools, and methods have advanced significantly. But in choosing outdoor furniture, it's very important to take note on how the particular item is assembled, how the joints are made, what fixings are used, the strength of the individual components and the quality of the finish. For commercial outdoor furniture, which needs to withstand not only the weather but also mistreatment and neglect, the centuries old joining method of mortice and tenon is still generally preferred. A well-made item of furniture, with mortice and tenon joints will be solid, with tight joints and will last for years. But of course the extra time and care taken in this method of construction means the price will inevitably be higher of the furniture item. To speed up construction and keep costs down, allot of furniture is now constructed using a dowelled joints. Whilst not as strong as traditional mortice and tenon joints, a dowelled joint can give many years of good service. In fact a lot of furniture may use mortice and tenon joints for the main structural elements but dowels for the more decorative elements in the design - a perfectly acceptable compromise. Of course any adhesives used should be water resistant, something that is not really possible to check, but generally this does not seem to be a problem in practice, except maybe in really low cost outdoor furniture. For added strength, some makers will combine brass fittings with dowelled joints to ensure the dowelled joints are pulled together and kept as tight as possible. The cheapest method of construction uses metal fixings only. Often these are used with kit-set or knock-down self assembly furniture, as it allows the homeowner to save more money by assembling the product themselves. The downside is that such furniture is generally not as strong and involves regular tightening of the fittings, as they tend to bed into the wood with continual use of the furniture. Also inferior quality fittings may be used which are neither made of corrosion resistant metals such as brass, nor have a high quality plated finish, so can be subject to rusting or other corrosion at quite an early stage. Another less obvious problem with tables in particular, is swelling of the wood. As wood generally expands at a different rate in its longitudinal and tangential planes, this means that as the timber gets wet or dries out, unsightly gaps can occur at joints, or in the worst cases, the timber twists out of shape, if the maker has not taken sufficient care at the design stage. You need to take care for example with some wooden table tops, if the middle of the table is a more complex design with elements running both straight and perpendicular. Most manufacturers will leave small expansion gaps at the end of the longitudinal wood sections to allow for some expansion and contraction. With some more stable wood species such as teak, this is typically not a problem, but with some other species, expansion in both directions can be significantly different and problems can arise. Take note also of the finish of the piece. With certain wood species, the grain of the timber can be rather coarse, so unless the edges of the piece are sanded well, it's possible to get splinters. Take particular note of the end grain. Many manufacturers apply a special oil coating or wax to the end grain to prevent the ingress of water and help to prolong the life of the furniture. Most manufacturers will apply some type of initial protective coating, although this is generally a rather basic coating which tends to enhance the colour of the wood rather than contributing to any particular preservative properties. To ensure a longer life, it is thus recommended that you give your furniture a further coating with a good quality decking or furniture oil very shortly after you purchase the item, and certainly within the first six months of its use. And so, in conclusion, when looking at purchasing outdoor furniture, the important points to consider (apart from the durability of the wood species) are the type of joints, the thickness of timber used, the quality of any metal fixings and the actual design aspects of the particular piece. Anyone in the world By Tim Gorman When people talk about tummy tuck surgery, you could almost be forgiven for thinking it's some sort of miracle operation that will change you overnight with no obvious after effects. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Undergoing a tummy tuck procedure is a major surgical procedure, and a great deal of thought should go into the decision to go ahead. For starters, are you the best candidate for having a tummy tuck? This isn't some sort of rapid weight loss surgery - in fact, it's mostly suitable for people with an excess of skin in the abdominal region. This has usually been caused by multiple pregnancies or the loss of a great deal of weight. When the abdominal muscles have been repeatedly or extensively stretched, they may struggle to regain their elasticity, leading to sagging skin and an unsightly abdomen. The procedure can also help improve the skin's appearance where the patient has excessive sub-navel stretch marks. Any candidate for a tummy tuck needs to be in good physical health. It's also important to realize that you will be left with permanent scarring after the operation, and you also have to accept all the usual risks involved in undergoing a general anesthetic. An abdominoplasty requires months of recovery time, as well as careful preparation prior to the operation, and good post-operative care. If you're planning further pregnancies, or intending to lose a significant amount of weight, then a tummy tuck isn't a good idea. You are better off postponing the surgery, or else you risk having the vertical abdominal muscles separate, which requires more surgery to repair. If you've already had some type of abdominal surgery, your surgeon may advise against a tummy tuck, or you may find that the new scars are a great deal more visible than you expected. You also need to think about how a tummy tuck will affect your life in general. Yes, your general state of health needs to be good in order to have the surgery, but you need to allow time to prepare for the operation, as well as being able to take life easy for many months afterwards. This can be particularly difficult if you have dependents, or your job requires you to be very active. After the operation you will most likely find yourself physically unable to care for others, and may find your energy levels are substantially lower than normal.' If you have strong abdominal muscles and good health, then your recovery time will be on the shorter end of the scale, but some patients take as many as eight months to get completely back to normal. During this time they may be unable to drive or lift any heavy objects. If you know you can't afford to be restricted for such a long period, then perhaps you should consider waiting to have a tummy tuck until your circumstances will allow you an extended recovery period. Make sure you have discussed the operation with family and friends, as you may find yourself needing their support in the months to come. Although abdominoplasty can improve the appearance of your abdomen, it's important to realize this isn't a miracle operation. It may help to improve your self-confidence, but you still need to be realistic about the results of the surgery. Make sure you've discussed the operation fully with your surgeon, and also discussed the expected outcomes, so that you're not left believing that a tummy tuck will achieve things that are impossible. Anyone in the world By Kim Martin This is a good topic to discuss especially now since the popularity of all the make-over shows. I have always been curious as to why people, mostly women, have this idea that they are expected to look a certain way in order to "fit in" with society. We all would like to believe that quaint saying, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but how true and meaningful is that phrase when the beholder has been brainwashed, so to speak, into subscribing to the belief that beauty is the artificial look we see on glamour mags, in TV commercials, and even in some children's books? For some time now, that image has consisted mainly of white women and the "white standard of beauty". I decided to take this question of plastic surgery and the search for beauty and see how it can affect some women in the African-American community. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, African-Americans make up only 6% of plastic surgery patients. Why is this? Do African-American women have a more positive self/body image or is it that many cannot afford it? And for the 6% who do have surgery, to which standard of beauty were they trying to aspire? I chose to start my search for the white standard of beauty in 1960. I chose that year because at the time, a TV show was airing that sought to teach moral and societal lessons through fantastical tales.
Two episodes of this show were very telling and prophetic, and they both dealt with how society viewed beauty and the expectations placed on women to be "beautiful".
That show was, The Twilight Zone. Beauty in 1960...
Rod Serling offered us a tale of beauties and beasts in episode #42 entitled: Eye of the Beholder.
Here's a brief synopsis of the show I found at The Twilight Zone Guide:
Janet Tyler anxiously awaits the outcome of her latest surgery. Janet, who's abnormal face has made her an outcast, has had her eleventh hospital visit - the maximum allowed by the State. If it didn't succeed, she will be sent to live in a village where others of her kind are segregated. As her bandages are removed, she is revealed to be very beautiful. The doctor draws back in horror. As the lights come on we see the others, their faces are misshapen and deformed. As Janet runs from her room crying, she runs into another of her kind, a handsome man named Walter Smith. He is in charge of an outcast village, and he assures her that she will eventually feel she belongs. He tells her to remember the old saying: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
Although the show was filmed in black and white, we can clearly see that Ms. Tyler is Caucasian. The doctors appear to have darker skin, nevertheless, the idea here was that the viewers empathized with Ms. Tyler because she was the classic blonde, slender beauty commonly seen in 1960's fashion magazines.
As the show closes, the narrator speaks:
"Now the questions that come to mind. Where is this place and when is it, what kind of world where ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation from that norm? The answer is, it doesn't make any difference. Because the old saying happens to be true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this year or a hundred years hence, on this planet or wherever there is human life, perhaps out among the stars. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Lesson to be learned...in the Twilight Zone." 1964: The Standard Continues
Episode #137, in Season Five, is called, "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You", and was adapted by a short story called "The Beautiful People". In this episode, we meet Marilyn, a young woman who is about to go through a rite of passage in her community. This rite is called "The Transformation" and it requires citizens to choose among several models of bodies into which they will be transformed. The message here is that this society only sees one standard of beauty and that one will not be happy unless they look and act just like everyone else. Opening Narration:
"Given the chance, what young girl wouldn't happily exchange a plain face for a lovely one? What girl could refuse the opportunity to be beautiful? For want of a better estimate, let's call it the year 2000. At any rate, imagine a time in the future when science has developed a means of giving everyone the face and body he dreams of. It may not happen tomorrow--but it happens now, in the Twilight Zone." Once again, the beautiful people are all white and we don't see any women or men of color. What was this episode trying to tell black women about beauty? The closing narration:
Portrait of a young lady in love--with herself. Improbable? Perhaps. But in an age of plastic surgery, body building, and an infinity of cosmetics, let us hesitate to say impossible. These and other strange blessings may be waiting in the future--which after all, is the Twilight Zone." Beauty 40 Years Later Some aspects of beauty standards have changed, but not much. We do see more black models and beautiful black women, but when you look at the majority of the more famous ones, (Tyra, Halle, Janet, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce, a few of whom have had plastic surgery, on their noses and other body parts), you can see straight away that they have many Caucasian attributes: small, pinched noses, lighter complexion, lighter eyes, straight, lightly colored hair. It is rare that you will see a model with very dark skin, a tight afro, wide, round, larger nose, and full, large lips. Flip through any issue of Vogue or Glamour and look for that image I just described. Then look for the first image I described. So, are black women trying to aspire to the white standard of beauty when they seek plastic surgery? According to Cynthia Winston, assistant professor of psychology at Howard University in Washington, D.C., We really don't know much about how blacks are influenced. Most of the research focuses on perceptions related to skin color. Foe most African-Americans, perception can be shaped by their environment. For example, an African-American woman growing up in an all-white neighborhood in Nebraska may be more likely than an African-American woman raised in inner-city Detroit to compare herself with white images of beauty. (Source: African-American Women & Plastic Surgery: Self-Improvement or Self-Hatred? By Angela D. Johnson, Sept. 2, 2003) Now What? I suppose, it all comes down to how one feels inside about themselves. But there is this viscous cycle of doubt that women constantly face so it's often hard to reconcile your inner voices with the outside images thrown at you everyday. Many women buy into the trends and fashions that dictate beauty. TV shows and print ads abound with images of sexy women. Fitness clubs persuade women to join not so they will lower their risk of heart disease, but so they will aspire to be beautiful on the outside. No one tries to sell things that will help them on the inside. In the end, you can look at all of this and say that there will always be standards of beauty and those who aspire to live up those standards, and those wanting to make a profit off those standards (cosmetic companies, ad agencies, modeling agencies, fashion designers, plastic surgeons, psychotherapists). The media portrays what people want to see and apparently, it's sex and "beauty". Ms. Martin currently resides in sunny Southern California with her son. When she's not writing, she works part-time as a preschool teacher where she hopes to help all children develop positive self and body images.
